The Batumi Drama Theatre has canceled the scheduled premiere of the play “DARK WEB” after the theatre administration said it became aware of the director’s plans to incorporate a “subjective political act” into the performance, a move the theatre said conflicted with its policy against “politicizing” the stage.
The premiere had been scheduled for February 7–8 on the theatre’s main stage, but the theatre said that two days earlier, it learned that “the director, Gega Gagnidze, intended to carry out a subjective political act on the theatre’s main stage as part of the performance.”
“We would like to emphasize that the Batumi Drama Theatre categorically distances itself from the politicization of the theatre space,” the theatre said in a February 5 Facebook post. “Bringing politics to the stage goes beyond the artistic framework and solely serves a specific political context.”
“As a result, the planned performance, the content of which does not comply with these principles, is canceled,” the statement said.
The cancellation comes amid mounting tensions between Georgia’s cultural sector and the ruling Georgian Dream party, as theatre professionals and artists have taken an increasingly visible role in pro-European, anti-government protests. Actors and comedians are among those serving prison terms over their involvement in the ongoing protest movement.
It also follows years of what have been widely seen as the government’s repressive policies in the cultural and arts sphere, including the dismissal of directors and managers at museums, theaters, and film institutions, among others.
