Police arrested 88 drug dealers and others involved in drug-related crimes nationwide over the past 24 hours, a figure Deputy Interior Minister Aleksandre Darakhvelidze described as “unprecedented.”
At a January 22 briefing, Darakhvelidze said police seized a “particularly large amount” of “various narcotics and psychotropic substances,” as well as firearms and money believed to come from illegal drug sales. Those arrested include both Georgian and foreign nationals. They face up to 20 years or life in prison.
Darakhvelidze said the dealers were selling drugs “systematically” to citizens. Among the drugs seized were cocaine, heroin, alpha-PVP, buprenorphine, methadone, morphine, MDMA, and dried marijuana, as well as items used for packaging.
The continued arrests follow what the Georgian Dream government describes as its “uncompromising” fight against drug-related crimes. At the end of 2025, the Interior Ministry said that over seven months it had arrested more than 5,000 people for drug-related offenses, including about 2,000 involved in drug dealing, and vowed to continue its crackdown on drugs.
