20 January in Baku: Memory, mourning and birth of independence

Night fell over Baku on 20 January 1990 not as a veil of rest, but as a shroud. Mikheil Kavelashvili Pardons 159 Inmates

Georgian Dream-elected President Mikheil Kavelashvili has pardoned 159 inmates on the occasion of Epiphany, with his administration citing “the principle of humanism” and “state interests” in exercising his constitutional discretion. The names of those pardoned have not been released.

The late-night announcement followed a day of waiting by journalists and families outside prisons in Tbilisi and Rustavi, hoping that those jailed in connection with anti-government protests and whose imprisonment is widely seen as unfair and politically motivated would be among the pardoned.

Journalists, families, and supporters continue to gather outside prisons in growing numbers. This article will be updated as new details emerge.
