Georgia’s Border Police said on January 10 that its Coast Guard detained the tanker Caminero, previously registered under the Russian flag, for violating maritime navigation rules in the country’s territorial waters.
The vessel was sailing under the Panamanian flag, the agency said. According to VesselFinder, a vessel-tracking website, the tanker was registered under the Russian flag in 2017 and before that, in 2015, under the Maltese flag. It was re-registered under the Panamanian flag in November 2022, following Western sanctions on Russian oil.
The Border Police said the ship’s captain, a Turkish citizen, was fined GEL 15,000 (about USD 5,600) under Georgia’s Code of Administrative Offenses. The specific article and clause cited in the statement set that fine for vessels with a total capacity of 3,000 to 5,000 tons. After the fine was paid, the vessel was allowed to continue its voyage, the agency said. As of January 11, vessel-tracking data showed the ship in the Black Sea.
