Ukraine war compensation commission
Georgia has joined a convention setting up an international commission to examine claims for compensation for damage, losses or harm caused by unlawful actions by the Russian Federation against Ukraine or on Ukrainian territory since 24 February 2022.
Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset said it was important for member states to find ways to move closer together.
“As members of the Council of Europe, we are in constant contact, and it is important to find ways to bring values and commitments closer together with regard to the fundamental elements that make us one continent,” Berset said.
Georgia’s Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili said Ukraine must have the appropriate tools to obtain compensation for the damage inflicted on the country and its population as a result of what she described as an unjust war.
She said the tragic reality unfolding today in the heart of Europe requires greater efforts to restore peace in the region, adding that grave violations of international norms must not go unpunished.
“Georgia welcomes the step towards establishing an international compensation mechanism, of which the International Claims Commission will be an integral part,” Bochorishvili said.
In her remarks, Bochorishvili also pointed to Georgia’s own difficult experience, saying the country understands all too well the importance of upholding international norms and the high price society pays as a result of injustice.
