UK minister urges Russia to withdraw from Georgia

UK Minister of State Stephen Doughty has once again urged Russia to meet its OSCE commitments and withdraw its troops from Georgian territory, including the occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. He made the statement at the OSCE foreign ministers’ meeting.

“Moscow’s actions pose a clear threat to peace and security in Europe and beyond — from cyberattacks on critical infrastructure to incursions into the airspace of countries represented at this table, and the continued occupation of territories. All of this has consequences not only for Euro-Atlantic security, but for global security as well.

We urge Russia to honour its OSCE commitments and withdraw its forces from Georgia’s territories — Abkhazia and South Ossetia — as well as from Transnistria in Moldova, in full accordance with international law. While we hold Russia accountable, our efforts to support peace, of course, continue.

Putin has repeatedly broken his word, and there is no sign he is ready for negotiations. Whatever happens in the coming days, we must stay focused on the future — a future that means a strong, peaceful and prosperous Ukraine. And the OSCE must be ready to help the country recover and rebuild,” Doughty said.
