Georgia’s third president, Mikheil Saakashvili, has been transferred from the Vivamedi clinic back to Prison No. 12, where he will continue serving his sentence under general conditions, the Special Penitentiary Service said.
The agency explained that Saakashvili was discharged from hospital as his health condition is satisfactory and he no longer requires inpatient treatment.
“As is known to the public, on 12 May 2022, convicted Mikheil Saakashvili was transferred to the Vivamedi clinic for inpatient treatment, where he has remained until now and received appropriate medical care.
In accordance with Georgian legislation, the return of a patient from a civilian hospital to a penitentiary facility is carried out based on the decision of the attending physician, taking into account the prisoner’s health condition.
Since the health condition of convicted Mikheil Saakashvili is satisfactory and he no longer requires inpatient treatment, he has been discharged from the civilian clinic and returned to Penitentiary Facility No. 12, where he will continue serving his sentence under general conditions,” the statement said.
Mikheil Saakashvili was arrested on 1 October 2021 and sentenced to a total of 12 years and six months in prison across several cases.
He has also been banned from holding public office for three years after completing his sentence.
On 7 November this year, new criminal proceedings were launched against leaders of the pro-Western opposition — Mikheil Saakashvili, Giorgi Vashadze, Nika Gvaramia, Nikanor Melia, Zurab “Girchi” Japaridze, Elene Khoshtaria, Mamuka Khazaradze, and Badri Japaridze.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the charges include sabotage, aiding and abetting hostile activities against a foreign state, financing actions aimed at undermining Georgia’s constitutional order and national security, as well as incitement to violently overthrow the constitutional order and state authority.
Under the new case, Saakashvili faces between two and four years in prison.
