Russia’s Security Council secretary, Sergei Shoigu, has praised the “resilience” of Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream. He said the party had defended the interests of the country and its people.
Shoigu made the comments at a press conference following a meeting of CIS security council secretaries.
“Georgia’s authorities managed to withstand destructive actions aimed at destabilising the situation in the country during the elections. We must give credit to their resilience – they truly defended the interests of Georgia and the Georgian people,” Shoigu said.
He also mentioned Georgia at the start of the meeting, echoing Georgian Dream’s claim that the West allegedly backed an attempted coup in the country:
“To strengthen their influence in the post-Soviet space, Western countries are prepared to go to almost any length. With their direct support, presidential and parliamentary elections in Moldova were falsified, with Moldovan citizens living in Russia effectively deprived of their right to vote. Georgia’s authorities spoke of gross interference in internal affairs and attempts to provoke a coup. At the same time, the overall situation in the South Caucasus is showing signs of improvement.”
As a reminder, the day before, Russia’s deputy Security Council secretary, Alexei Shevtsov, said that CIS and Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) member states share Russia’s desire to defend “traditional spiritual and moral values.” He included Georgia in this context.
“In Georgia, the authorities found the strength to resist attempts to undermine the traditional way of life and impose so-called pseudo-values, such as LGBT ideas, which are entirely incompatible with the peoples of the Caucasus,” Shevtsov said.
