Month: August 2025
Armenia and Pakistan formally established diplomatic relations on August 31, 2025, during the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China. The landmark agreement was sealed with the exchange of a Joint Communiqué, marking a significant shift in their bilateral relations after decades of estrangement.
The signing ceremony, held on the sidelines of the SCO Summit, signifies a new era of cooperation between the two nations, which had previously lacked formal diplomatic ties due to regional geopolitical dynamics, particularly Pakistan’s longstanding support for Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The recent U.S.-brokered peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, signed earlier this month, paved the way for this diplomatic breakthrough, allowing Pakistan to recognize Armenia’s sovereignty more than 30 years after its independence in 1991.
During the ceremony, both foreign ministers reaffirmed their commitment to the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter, emphasizing mutual respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peaceful coexistence. Discussions focused on potential areas of collaboration, including economy, education, culture, and tourism, with both sides expressing optimism about fostering mutually beneficial ties.
The establishment of diplomatic ties comes as part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to expand its global diplomatic outreach and Armenia’s efforts to diversify its international partnerships. Analysts suggest that this move could open new avenues for economic and cultural exchanges, particularly within the South and Central Asian regions, and enhance cooperation on international platforms like the SCO, where both nations are engaged as members or partners.
