U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Robin Dunnigan Announces Retirement

U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Robin Dunnigan announced her retirement, saying it was a “personal decision.”

“After 33 years representing the United States as a diplomat, I have made the personal decision to retire,” Dunnigan said in a June 5 statement. “This is a fully personal decision. I have not been asked to return by my government.”

Robin Dunnigan has served as the U.S. Ambassador to Georgia since 2023. She plans to depart from the country in July.

“Serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Georgia has been the greatest honor and privilege of my entire career, and I will forever be proud of the work the tremendous U.S. government team, in Washington and here at the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi, has done to advance the partnership between our peoples and our countries,” the diplomat noted.

Her decision to retire as a diplomat came amid further deteriorating U.S.-Georgia relations and months after President Trump’s return to the White House.

She thanked the Georgian people for their “incredible generosity and warmth,” saying she and her family were welcomed everywhere with “unparalleled Georgian hospitality.”

“I am more certain today than ever that the core values that bind Americans and Georgians will ensure that our special partnership and friendship endures,” she added.

“I will continue to work hard to strengthen our ties until I depart in July.”

Robin Dunnigan succeeded Kelly C. Degnan as U.S. Ambassador to Georgia. Before her post in Tbilisi, she served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Central and Eastern Europe in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. Her term in that role ended on June 2, 2023. She also served as Chargé d’Affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Austria from 2018 to 2021.

The Daily Beat: 4 June

Reports have emerged indicating that the Foreign Ministry informed employees of the Information Center on NATO and the EU that the center will be “liquidated.” The Foreign Ministry confirmed these reports to Civil.ge, adding that the center, which has operated as a legal entity of public law (LEPL) under its jurisdiction since 2017, will be “merged” with the ministry as part of a “reorganization” process.

On June 3, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution reiterating the right of return of all displaced persons and refugees in Georgia’s Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, with 107 votes in favor, 9 against, and 49 abstentions. Syria, which had typically voted against the resolution, abstained this year after the fall of the Assad regime last December.

The Eurobarometer survey indicated a nine-point drop in trust in the EU in Georgia, with trust in government at 51%. This survey was conducted by GORBI, a Tbilisi-based polling organization that had previously carried out pre-election surveys and exit polls for the pro-Georgian Dream channel, Imedi TV. GORBI confirmed to Civil.ge that it conducted the poll in Georgia.

The European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee adopted a report regarding political developments in Georgia in 2023-2024, with 55 votes in favor, 14 against, and four abstentions. The document calls for a reassessment of the EU’s policy toward Georgia and warns of “the conditional suspension” of economic cooperation and privileges under the EU-Georgia Association Agreement.

Georgia’s Prosecutor General, Giorgi Gabitashvili, who is currently sanctioned by the U.K., has been nominated to become the Chief Auditor following the departure of Tsotne Kavlashvili from the position. Kavlashvili has been reassigned as the Deputy Finance Minister under the ruling Georgian Dream government, a role he previously held from 2015 to 2022.

Indian Vloggers Under Fire: Stricter Regulations Loom After Derogatory Remarks in Türkiye

An Indian YouTuber known online as Malik Swashbuckler, has ignited international outrage after posting videos containing sexually explicit and derogatory remarks about Turkish women during his travels in Türkiye. The vlogger’s actions, which included objectifying a Turkish female tour guide and using abusive language toward a local shopkeeper, have prompted Turkish authorities to reportedly detain him, though official confirmation is pending. The incident has not only strained India-Türkiye relations but also sparked a broader global conversation about the conduct of Indian vloggers and tourists abroad.

In one widely circulated video, Swashbuckler was heard making sexually suggestive comments in Hindi, including asking his viewers if he should assault his Turkish guide, presumably believing the language barrier would conceal his remarks. Another clip showed him aggressively confronting a shopkeeper over the absence of an Indian flag, using derogatory terms. Turkish social media users quickly flagged the content, leading to widespread condemnation and calls for legal action. Swashbuckler issued a public apology and deleted the offending videos, but they continue to circulate online, fueling public anger.

The backlash has prompted discussions in Türkiye and beyond about implementing stricter regulations for foreign vloggers and tourists. Turkish authorities are reportedly considering measures to monitor content creators more closely, particularly those filming in public spaces. Social media users’ strong sentiment, with users demanding accountability and some even calling for a ban on Indian tourists. One user wrote, “This is unacceptable to go as a tourist and then abuse the locals,” while another labeled the vlogger’s actions as “public harassment.”

The controversy comes at a time of heightened tensions between India and Türkiye, exacerbated by Türkiye’s stance on recent India-Pakistan conflicts, which has led to boycott calls by some Indian tourists. This incident has further strained perceptions, with Indian travelers now facing increased scrutiny in Türkiye and other countries like Azerbaijan, where similar boycott sentiments have emerged.

Globally, the incident has raised concerns about the behavior of Indian vloggers and tourists. Countries popular with Indian content creators, such as the UAE and European nations, are reportedly keeping a closer eye on their activities. The rise of vlogging has amplified the reach of such content, and incidents like this highlight the need for cultural sensitivity and accountability. In India, netizens have expressed shame over the incident, with one X user stating, “Anyone going abroad represents his or her country. Disrespecting others should be punishable.”

The controversy has sparked calls for guidelines to regulate vloggers’ conduct abroad. Experts suggest that platforms like YouTube may also face pressure to enforce stricter content moderation to prevent such incidents. As the debate grows, the actions of Indian vloggers and tourists are under a global microscope, with countries signaling zero tolerance for offensive behavior.
