Spain hosted a high-level meeting of European and Arab nations on Sunday, May 25, to press for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and advance the long-stalled two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
The gathering, part of the Madrid Group (G5+), brought together representatives from 20 countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey, alongside the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and chart a path toward Palestinian statehood.
The meeting follows Israel’s partial easing of the blockade on May 19, allowing minimal aid—such as five trucks of baby food and medical supplies—into Gaza. The United Nations and aid groups have deemed this insufficient, with 9,000 trucks’ worth of aid still stranded at the Egyptian border.
The EU’s recent decision to review its cooperation deal with Israel has bolstered calls for accountability. Spain’s push to suspend the agreement and impose an arms embargo reflects its role as one of the EU’s staunchest critics of Israel, alongside Ireland and Norway, which recognized Palestine in 2024. However, EU divisions persist, with Germany and Austria leaning pro-Israel and others, like France, seeking balance.
As the Madrid Group prepares for the UN conference, the path to a two-state solution faces steep challenges. Netanyahu’s insistence on demilitarizing Gaza and rejecting Palestinian sovereignty, coupled with Hamas’s control of Gaza, complicates negotiations. Yet, with 146 UN member states recognizing Palestine and growing global pressure, the Madrid summit signals a renewed diplomatic push to end the war and address Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, where starvation remains a daily threat.
#Iran’s connectivity gains through strategic corridors underscore the importance of integrating the #SouthCaucasus, particularly in enhancing access to the #BlackSea. Yet, the region’s full potential remains unrealised due to lingering geopolitical tensions.#YerevanDialogue2025 pic.twitter.com/Okv6gi3mGe
