Armenia is outside German foreign policy’s interests – Waldemar Herdt

Speaking with Alpha News, Waldemar Herdt, former Bundestag member and chair of the International Council of Russian Germans, commented on the results of the parliamentary election in Germany.

“The election results were expected and, in my opinion, optimal, because any other outcome would have led to an organized or spontaneous social outburst in the country. If, for example, the Alternative for Germany party had gained a very large percentage, the opposition parties would have brought the people out to the streets and organized a ‘Maidan’, and this is not good either. But now what the Christian Democrats wanted has happened, that is, the creation of a coalition with two parties. Of course, they expected more, just as the Alternative for Germany expected more for itself, but people were very confused in all these political formulas. So, they voted according to the situation.

In fact, the AfD party should have gained more than 50% because the situation was completely on its side. Not because the party is good, but because all the forecasts we talked about came true. And it turned out even worse than it is, because the economy and security of the country are destroyed, crime is simply at the highest level, gender policy is completely out of control, that is, all the conditions for a new force to come to power emerged, but this new force was not allowed to come to power. And, probably, it is not necessary yet. This will happen in the next election,” Herdt said.

According to the expert, the arrival of a new government in Germany will have a negative impact on post-Soviet countries.

“For post-Soviet countries, this will have a rather negative impact, it will not get better. A party has come to power that calls for tough ultimatums towards Moscow. German Chancellor Scholz is leaving power, and he was a restraining factor and a timid supporter of stopping the supply of weapons to Ukraine. Now he is leaving, and supporters of tougher measures towards Russia will come, so nothing good will come of changing this course. God grant that Trump will be able to push through his doctrine of improving relations with Russia, and if he succeeds, then I believe they will have to change their rhetoric. And if he fails, Europe will be on its own, which can lead to a major catastrophe, as it already happened once,” Herdt noted.

According to the former Bundestag member, Germany has no time for Armenia now.

“Right now, to be honest, there is no time for Armenia, because firstly, Germany no longer has as much influence as it used to. Secondly, Armenia is not in the zone of interest of Germany’s foreign policy,” Herdt concluded.
