Georgia: The Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia, David Songulashvili met with World Bank mission representatives on January 27, 2025, Monday.
The Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia shared glimpses of the meeting on its official Facebook page. The Ministry also shared a small note about the meeting along with the photographs.
During their meeting, the Minister of Environment and Agriculture David Songulashvili discussed issues of deepening cooperation on irrigation development and sustainable land management with the Manager of the Agriculture and Food Sector of the World Bank in Europe and Central Asia Holger Kreis.
The Main goals of the World Bank are:
- community-driven development,
- aid coordination,
- safeguarding vulnerable groups,
- addressing climate change.
According to the information shared by the ministry, it should be noted that the discussion concentrated on the goals of the World Bank. So the talk between them was mainly focused on developing climate-friendly agriculture, increasing access to modern technologies and equipment for farmers, and reducing the risks posed by global warming.
According to David Songulashvili, with the support of the World Bank, various projects are being implemented in Georgia and they help to improve the economic and agricultural development of the country.
“With the support of the World Bank, a number of important projects are being implemented in Georgia, which promotes sustainable development of agriculture. We follow the strategy of agriculture and rural development and the existing action plan; the involvement of the World Bank for their implementation, especially in terms of sharing new technologies, is important,” David Songulashvili mentioned in a social media post.
The manager of the Agriculture and Food Sector of the World Bank in Europe and Central Asia expressed his warm gratitude towards Minister Holger Kraim for his fruitful cooperation. He also noted that the World Bank is ready to implement new projects in the region.
“The fact that environmental protection and agricultural development issues in Georgia are united in one ministry, implements climate-wise agriculture projects more effectively,” said Holger Kreim.
According to the information shared, the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture is implementing Irrigation and Soil (GRAIL) project, with the support of the World Bank.
The project will improve agricultural production, provide farmers with irrigation and drainage services, and strengthen institutional national irrigation and land management capabilities. The total cost of the project is $150 million US dollars.
