Having had the privilege of meeting President Ilham Aliyev in Shusha, I was profoundly impressed by his charisma, intelligence, and unwavering honesty to his nation and country. President Aliyev’s leadership is marked by a series of visionary initiatives that have consistently become realities, earning a distinguished place in history. His strategic foresight and commitment to environmental and economic reforms have positioned Azerbaijan as a model for sustainable development.

Indeed, President Aliyev’s initiatives have not only transformed Azerbaijan’s environmental landscape but have also strengthened its position on the global stage. His ability to turn visionary concepts into concrete actions has garnered international recognition and respect. This track record of success provides a robust foundation for Azerbaijan’s role as the host of both World Environment Day 2026 and COP29.

World Environment Day 2026 will focus on climate change, a critical issue that impacts every corner of the globe. As the host, Azerbaijan will play a pivotal role in galvanising international efforts to combat environmental degradation. This event will bring together governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals to accelerate progress towards a sustainable future.

In recent years, the global community has made significant strides in addressing the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature loss, and pollution. The outcomes of previous UN Climate Change Conferences, such as COP26, COP27, and COP28, have laid the groundwork for new commitments to renewable energy, efficiency, and methane reduction. Azerbaijan’s leadership in hosting COP29 will further these efforts, emphasizing critical progress on climate finance, transparency, technology, and more ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Azerbaijan’s proactive stance in environmental matters is evident in its recent initiatives and achievements. The nation’s commitment to nearly doubling its renewable energy sources by 2030, growing forests, and reaching zero-waste status are exemplary goals that showcase its dedication to sustainability. Furthermore, Azerbaijan’s efforts to combat desertification and manage waste align with global objectives to create a healthier, more resilient planet.

In her press conference in Baku, Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP, praised Azerbaijan for its dedication to tackling the triple planetary crisis. She highlighted the nation’s impressive biodiversity conservation efforts, including those witnessed at Shirvan National Park and the Khilli Sturgeon Fish Hatchery. Azerbaijan’s leadership in hosting COP29 will be crucial in driving global action and ensuring substantial progress on climate-related issues.

Governments, businesses, civil society, and youth leaders around the world are increasingly calling for bold and transformative actions to address climate change. The urgency to end fossil fuel use, restore degraded nature, reduce pollution, and transition to clean energy is more pressing than ever. UNEP’s ongoing research and flagship reports, such as the Emissions Gap Report and Adaptation Gap Report, will continue to support Azerbaijan’s presidency, providing critical data and insights to inform the negotiations and initiatives at COP29. These efforts will ensure that Azerbaijan’s leadership is both informed and impactful, driving meaningful progress on the global stage.

The government of Azerbaijan has provided financial assistance for the reconstruction and repair of the shelter of the National Library of Ukraine for Children, according to Azerbaijan in Focus, reporting AzerTac.

Addressing the event, Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Ukraine Seymur Mardaliyev highlighted the humanitarian assistance provided by the country to Ukraine. He expressed his country`s readiness to further assist Ukraine in implementing infrastructure, social and humanitarian projects. The Ambassador also underlined that Azerbaijan contributes to the rehabilitation of children affected by the war in Ukraine.

“The assistance provided today for the reconstruction and repair of the children’s library is an integral part of the Azerbaijani government`s humane policy,” the ambassador added.

General Director of the National Library of Ukraine for Children Alla Gordienko expressed her gratitude to the Azerbaijani government for support.

She noted that as a friendly and brotherly country, Azerbaijan supports Ukraine in these difficult days. Since the first days of the war, the Azerbaijani government has been sending aid to Ukraine.

As part of the event, 169 books about Azerbaijan were donated to the library.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan hosted a meeting chaired by Mazahir Panahov, according to Azerbaijan in Focus, reporting AzerTac.

First, CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov introduced the Commission members with the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on dissolving the sixth convocation Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan and setting snap parliamentary elections.

He said that the elections were scheduled for September 1, 2024 by the Order of the head of state.

During the meeting, the calendar plan was presented to the Commission members for discussion. Following the discussions, the calendar plan of main activities for holding snap parliamentary elections was approved.

The meeting also decided to establish an expert group operating under the CEC, consisting of 9 people, to investigate complaints about actions (inactions), as well as decisions violating the citizens’ electoral rights.

The meeting featured the establishment of a working group consisting of experts from the relevant state institutions set up under the Commission for the purpose of re-checking relevant documents and information in the case when it is necessary to consider the issue of registration of candidacy for deputy in the CEC.

The meeting, widely covered by representatives of mass media, also focused on current issues.

Azerbaijan’s national air carrier, AZAL, is set to begin regular flights to Karabakh for the first time ever, according to Azerbaijan in Focus, reporting AzerTac. Starting July 13, the airline will offer regular flights between Baku and Fuzuli.

Flights will be operated twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

A one-way ticket to Fuzuli costs ₼78, which includes hand luggage up to 10 kg and checked luggage up to 23 kg. Tickets will soon be available on AZAL’s website.

Additionally, the Board of the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan has decided that, given the social importance of the Baku-Nakhchivan-Baku route, the ticket price for Azerbaijani citizens will remain unchanged. For foreign citizens, fares will be set according to commercial conditions.
