“Football in Spain is different, there are six leagues in the same age group. You have to train a lot for it, because you can lose your place at any moment”, says Turan Gasimli, a 14-year-old Azerbaijani football player who currently plays for the Spanish Getafe Futbol Club, according to Azerbaijan in Focus, reporting Oxu.az.
Turan has been practicing karate in Sumgayit since he was five years old, and at the age of six, he won the title of Azerbaijan champion among children. Later, he moved to Malaga, Spain with his parents. He practiced karate for a while, and then enrolled in the children’s football school of the “Malaga” club.
The fact that Turan is left-handed, and uses his right leg as actively as his left leg, has quick and nimble ankles, and plays with perfect intermediate passes has quickly attracted the attention of coaches. In the 2018/19 season, he was recruited to the “Benjamin A” team of the club, wearing the number seven jersey in the second round of the season, and became an irreplaceable player of the team. He appeared in the starting lineup in all 15 games in the second round. Despite playing in the middle field or on the left wing, with 14 goals and 17 assists, he attracted the attention of the club’s coaches and was selected as the most valuable player of the year in the club he played for.
At the beginning of the 2019/20 season, a charity game was organized in Granada, Spain, and 100 talented and promising children from all over Spain were invited to this game. Turan was also invited to this game. Turan’s team won 3:1 in the final with two goals and one assist scored by our compatriot.
– You used to practice karate. How did you decide to switch to football?
– Yes, I have practiced karate in Sumgait since I was four and a half years old. We moved to Spain when I was six, and I practiced karate there for six months. Next to the karate sports complex, there was a base of the “Malaga” football club, where children played football, I watched them play every day on my way to and from training, and that’s how my interest started. My father also supported me. Later, I started playing in the lower age groups of “Malaga”.

– After “Malaga” you moved to “Getafe” club.
– I felt lucky when I moved to Getafe. Here, the training was more disciplined, tougher, and I realized that I would and should learn more.
– How is the training process going now?
– Now the category selections are ongoing. I was able to be one of the twenty children who earned the right to play in the highest league.

– How does it feel to play in “Getafe”?
– Football in Spain is different, there are six leagues in the same age group. You have to train a lot for it, no one guarantees that you will always play in the same team, and you can lose your place at any moment. That is why maximum concentration and discipline are required, you must be useful to the team while on the field. This year I played in the first 11 of 28 games, and finished the season with 20 goals and 26 assists. My goal is to get even higher results next season. Playing in this team is a wonderful and indescribable feeling.

– Do you have a dream to leave “Getafe” and join a team that ranks high in La Liga?
– The club I wanted to play for was “Barcelona”. My goal is to win the chance to play for the Catalan team and I believe I can do it.

– Do you have an idol?
– My idols are Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi.
– Which school are you attending at the moment?
– I am studying at Cambridge College.
– Does playing football interfere with your studies?
– Since education is important in Spain, the clubs arrange the exercises according to the lessons. I’m doing well in school.
– How do you spend your free time?
– I have very little free time, and I spend it swimming with friends or going to the library. Sometimes I play computer games.

– What do you want to say to your peers who want to play football?
– My advice to my peers is to work hard, learn as much as possible during the training process and fearlessly show what has been learned on the field. Maybe they will make mistakes at first, but they should analyze these mistakes and be careful not to repeat them again. Other than that, I’d like to say that if you don’t fit a coach’s game strategy and he doesn’t include you in the game, don’t ever get discouraged. Work harder and take advantage of every opportunity. You should always have self-confidence, stay away from ego, show maximum seriousness and respect your teammates.
