FBI’s Heavy Lift: A Surge of Terrorists, Spies, Insurrectionists

SEEMS LIKE HARDLY A DAY GOES BY that we don’t hear about an arrest of an American extremist planning a mass shooting, the assasination of a judge or election official, or foreign terrorists planning some mass casualty event. Then there’s the illegal border entry of foreign agents, the seeming tidal wave of Chinese espionage and hacking cases, and reports of Russian disinformation efforts to sow chaos in our elections.

All of which has put a heavy burden on the FBI, our primary domestic counterintelligence and counterrorism agency, to thwart such plots without infringing on the 1st Amendment rights of Americans to speak their minds, no matter how extreme their views. The FBI hardly has a spotless record in this regard.

To discuss this threat matrix, my guest on this week’s SpyTalk podcast is Frank Figliuzzi, who spent much of his three-plus decades in the FBI running major field offices before retiring in 2012 as assistant director of the FBI’s counterintelligence division. You’ve probably seen Frank on NBC or MSNBC, where he’s a regular contributor. He’s also been out and about this week talking about his new book,  Long Haul: Hunting the Highway Serial Killers, for which he spent 2,000 miles riding the road investigating truckstop sex trafficking.

Out of almost 200 destroyed historical and cultural monuments in Shusha, 18 ones restored to date

About 18 out of nearly 200 destroyed historical and cultural monuments in Shusha city have been restored to date, special representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Shusha region Aydin Karimov said, according to Azerbaijan in Focus, reporting Trend.

He made the announcement at the international conference “Organization of Turkic States: Towards New Strategic Goals Against the Background of Geopolitical Realities and Global Cataclysms.”

Karimov informed the conference participants that 16 out of 17 mosques in the city were destroyed by the occupants.

“On the instruction of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, work was started on immediate restoration of mosques, as a result of which 4 mosques were fully restored in the city within 4 years, construction of 2 new ones was started – one in the city and the other in Dashalti village.

All works carried out in Shusha, where the engineering infrastructure is being re-created, are carried out under the detailed General Plan of the city. A new full secondary school for 960 people has already been built and put into operation, and the construction of the Central District Hospital is planned to be completed within the current year,” Karimov noted.

He mentioned that the main task set before the government by President Ilham Aliyev is to return Azerbaijani citizens, who were forcibly exiled from their native lands as a result of Armenia’s occupation policy, to the homeland of their ancestors and provide them with employment.

“We are very proud to state that our compatriots exiled from here during the occupation have already returned to Shusha,” he added.
