Azerbaijani citizen detained in Moscow at the request of Armenia

Kamil Zeynalli detained in Russia

Kamil Zeynalli, a well-known blogger and fitness trainer in Azerbaijan, has been detained in Russia. It became known that the Armenian Interior Ministry declared him on international wanted list under the article “murder”. According to lawyer Elman Pashayev, the blogger may be placed in a pre-trial detention center for a month.

On the night of February 21, fitness trainer Kamil Zeynalli was detained at Moscow Domodedovo airport. About this he himself reported in his account in the social network Instagram.

“I was flying to Azerbaijan. In the Russian airport Domodedovo I was stopped by the police and taken to the department. They said that Armenia had put me on an international wanted list. They said that either we will hand you over to Armenia or they will come and take you away from here. In the morning I will appear before a Russian court,” he said.

Zeynalli emphasized that he has been wanted since last May:

“This is the third time I have visited Russia since May, but I have only been arrested now. I hope that our state structures will support me. I am currently in the police station. I am waiting and I hope that everything will be settled”.

According to Elman Pashayev, Kamil Zeynalli’s lawyer, he may be placed in a pre-trial detention center for a month. During this time, according to Russian law, Armenia must hand over the necessary documents to the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office.

“Later, the question of whether to hand him over to Armenia will be considered,” the Russian lawyer told Baku TV.

“According to the international convention, if a detainee is wanted by an enemy country, he cannot be extradited there. No peace treaty has been signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Therefore, Russia cannot hand him over to Armenia under any circumstances,” Pashayev added.

The General Prosecutor’s Office of Armenia noted that it had no information about the detention of the Azerbaijani blogger. But later, according to Armenian sources, the press service of the Armenian Interior Ministry confirmed that Kamil Zeynalli was put on an international wanted list under the article “murder”. The ministry noted that he is suspected of beheading an elderly man in Karabakh during the 44-day war.

According to Unikal, he is charged under Articles 135 (crimes against humanity), 137 (war crimes), 140 (war crimes using prohibited methods of warfare), 147 (involvement of mercenaries) and 149 (aggression) of the Armenian Criminal Code. The trial of Kamil Zeynalli will take place tomorrow.

Kamil Zeynalli’s wife, famous singer Gulay Zeynalli appealed to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

“Inshallah, all this will pass. I am asking for help from my president. Please don’t leave Kamil alone in a foreign country,” she wrote.

The issue is under control of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Russia. This was reported in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan. It was noted that he is provided with appropriate consular legal assistance.

“Kamil Zeynalli was detained last night. We do not know the true reasons for his detention. But the Azerbaijani Embassy immediately took all steps. We have hired a lawyer for him. The embassy is doing everything it can,” said Azerbaijani Ambassador to Russia Polad Bulbuloglu.

In October 2020, during the second Karabakh war, Kamil Zeynalli was administratively arrested for 10 days by decision of the Fizuli District Court for “posting information prohibited for dissemination on the Internet” and “violating the requirements of the martial law regime”.

In December 2020, already after the 44-day war, Kamil Zeynalli was arrested again. This time he received 30 days of administrative arrest for attempting to illegally enter the Kelbajar district, which was liberated from occupation in those days.

While this material was being prepared, it became known about the release of Kamil Zeynalli. He will return to Baku today, oxu.az reports.
