Azerbaijan’s famous writer and playwright Rustam Ibrahimbeyov was born on February 5, 1939 in Baku, in the family of Muhammad Ibrahimbeyov and Fatima Mashadibeyova, originally from Shamakhi, according to Azerbaijan in Focus, reporting Oxu.az.
He graduated from the Azerbaijan Institute of Oil and Chemistry and later received the qualifications of screenwriter and director at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow. Based on his works, more than 40 feature films, television films and performances have been shot.
He has been writing since 1962. 15 of his plays have been staged in theaters in more than 100 countries around the world. In 1989, he founded the company “Ibrus” (Ib – Ibrahimbeyov, Rus – Rustam) and the theater of the same name.
Ibrahimbeyov had two children, Fuad Ibrahimbeyov (currently a director) was born during his first marriage to Shohrat Ibrahimbeyova, in 1972, and Fatima Ibrahimbeyova (she is also a director) was born in 1974 from his second wife, People’s Artist Lyudmila Dukhovnaya.
In 1976 he was awarded the honorary title of “Honored Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR”, in 1979 he was awarded the Lenin Komsomol Prize, in 1980 he was awarded the State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR, in 1981 he was awarded the State Prize of the SSR, 1993; 1995; 1997; In 1999, he was awarded the state awards of the Russian Federation, in 1995 he was awarded the honorary title of “Honored Art Worker of the Russian Federation”, in 1998 he was awarded the honorary title of “People’s Writer of the Republic of Azerbaijan”, in 1999 he was awarded “Shohrat Order” and III degree “For Service to the Motherland” (Russian Federation), in 2000 the Commander of the Order of Literature and Arts (France), in 2001 the Order of Honor of the Commonwealth of Independent States, in 2006 the Gold Medal “Theatre Worker”, in 2009 the Order of Honor of the Moscow State Duma, was awarded the “Golden Orange” award (Turkey) in 2011.
Rustam Ibrahimbeyov died on March 11, 2022 in Moscow at the age of 83 after a long illness. On March 13, 2022, a farewell ceremony was held at the Central House of Cinematographers in Moscow. His body was brought to Baku on March 16. The artist was buried in the Alley of Honor.
