Donald Trump asked to pay NY Times nearly $400,000 in legal costs

Former President Donald Trump has been ordered to pay the New York Times nearly $400,000 (£313,900) in legal fees for a failed lawsuit, the BBC reports.

Mr Trump’s $100m lawsuit accused the newspaper and Mr Trump’s estranged niece, Mary Trump, of “an insidious plot” to obtain his tax records.

A judge dismissed it last year, saying its claims “fail as a matter of constitutional law”.

The series of articles on Mr Trump’s financial affairs won a Pulitzer Prize.

On Friday, New York Supreme Court Judge Robert Reed, a Democrat, ordered Mr Trump to repay the New York Times for fees incurred by his failed legal action.

The judge said he arrived at the amount, $392,638, after considering several matters, including “the complexity of the issues presented” in the lawsuit, as well as the “ability and reputation” of the newspaper’s lawyers.

US launches new missile strike on Houthi target in Yemen

The US carries out a new attack on a Houthi site in Yemen, a day after wider attacks led by the US and the UK, the BBC reports.

In what the US called a “follow-up action” to Thursday night’s attacks, a US ship fired missiles at a radar site.

The US says the attacks this week are “designed to degrade the Houthis’ ability to attack maritime vessels.”

It says since 19 November, “Iranian-backed Houthi militants have attempted to attack and harass vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden 28 times.”

The Houthis have vowed the US and UK strikes will not go without “punishment or retaliation.”

In an apparent Houthi attack on Friday night, a missile landed around 500 metres from an oil tanker in the Red Sea.

And in Gaza, Israel’s bombardment continued overnight, with dozens reportedly killed in Gaza City and the central Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military says it “eliminated terrorists” in Khan Younis in the south, and destroyed rocket launchers and tunnels.
