Bulgarian President Rumen Radev here on Monday appealed to the Constitutional Court for a number of amendments to the Constitution adopted by the Parliament, his press office said in a statement.
The amendments Radev referred to, which were adopted on December, 2023, contained contradictions with other constitutional provisions, and changed the balance between institutions and the mutual control between them, directly affecting the form of state governance, the statement said.
The President in particular did not agree with the changes giving the right to people with dual citizenship to be members of the Parliament and ministers, the statement said.
Up to now, the Constitution said that eligible for election to the Parliament and the Council of Ministers shall be any Bulgarian citizen “who does not hold another citizenship.”
The head of state also did not agree with other changes, such as the suspension of his powers related to the dissolution of the parliament, and the appointment of a caretaker government.
Radev also opposed “the hasty adoption of constitutional amendments with the minimum required majority and no substantive discussion,” according to the statement.
The amendments to the Constitution were tabled in July 2023 by the ruling majority which has tense relations with Radev.
