Rescuers in Japan are rushing to find hundreds of people missing after a devastating New Year’s Day earthquake. A critical 72-hour period to find survivors from when the quake struck ended late on Thursday. On Friday, the death toll from the 7.6 magnitude earthquake in the remote Noto peninsula rose to 92.
However, 242 people are still missing. The earthquake, which was followed by several strong aftershocks, caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure, trapping many people under rubble. Thousands of residents in coastal areas were evacuated to shelters after tsunami warnings were issued. Some areas reported waves of up to 1.2 meters
The earthquake also raised concerns about the safety of nuclear plants in the region. Kansai Electric, the operator of two reactors in Fukui prefecture, said there were no abnormalities reported at its facilities. Japan is still recovering from the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, which was triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami that killed nearly 18,000 people.
The Noto peninsula is known for its rural and ageing communities, which have been struggling with depopulation and lack of resources. Some experts have warned that Japan’s earthquake resilience measures may not be sufficient to protect these vulnerable areas.
The earthquake was the strongest to hit Japan since 2011, and the fourth strongest on record. Japan is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of intense seismic activity that experiences frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

In ensuring the execution of the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the conscription of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan for active military service and the discharge of servicemen from active military service to the reserve for the period of January 1-30, 2024, events aimed at the discharge of servicemen, who completed their active military service, are being held in the types of troops (forces), Army Corps, formations and independent military units of the Azerbaijan Army. The events are being held according to the instruction of the Minister of Defense, Colonel General Zakir Hasanov.
At the events, the memory of the National Leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev, and Shehids (Martyrs), who sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of the Motherland, was honored with observing a minute of silence. The National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan was performed.
The speakers at the farewell ceremonies congratulated the active military servicemen, who were discharged to reserve from the Azerbaijan Armed Forces, on worthily completing military service and wished them success in their future activities.
In turn, servicemen, who completed their military service, expressed pride in serving in the Azerbaijan Army. They also expressed confidence that the positive qualities and experience acquired during the military service will be beneficial in their future lives.
A group of servicemen, who distinguished themselves during military service, was presented honorary certificates and other awards.
At the end of the events, discharged servicemen were sent to their places of residence.

В связи с исполнением Распоряжения Президента Азербайджанской Республики «О призыве с 1 по 30 января 2024 года граждан Азербайджанской Республики на срочную действительную военную службу и увольнении в запас военнослужащих срочной действительной военной службы», по поручению министра обороны генерал-полковника Закира Гасанова в видах войск (сил), соединениях, объединениях и отдельных воинских частях Азербайджанской Армии продолжаются мероприятия по увольнению в запас военнослужащих, завершивших срочную действительную военную службу.
На мероприятиях сначала минутой молчания была почтена память Общенационального лидера азербайджанского народа Гейдара Алиева и шехидов, отдавших жизнь во имя суверенитета, территориальной целостности и свободы наших земель, прозвучал Государственный гимн Азербайджанской Республики.
Выступившие на мероприятиях поздравили уволенных в запас военнослужащих срочной действительной военной службы с достойным завершением военной службы и пожелали им успехов в дальнейшей деятельности.
В свою очередь, завершившие срок военной службы военнослужащие отметили, что с гордостью несли службу в рядах Азербайджанской Армии. Они выразили уверенность в том, что положительные качества и навыки, приобретенные ими за время службы в Армии, пригодятся им в дальнейшей жизни.
Группе военнослужащих, отличившихся за время службы, были вручены почётные грамоты и другие награды.
Уволенные в запас военнослужащие были отправлены в районы своего проживания.
