A federal court in Argentina has suspended the labor reforms enacted by President Javier Miele, who took office in December 2023 with a promise to slash public spending and privatize state-owned companies.
The court ruled that the reforms, which included reducing severance pay, allowing more flexible contracts, and limiting union power, violated the constitutional rights of workers and were issued without proper consultation.
The ruling came after a legal challenge filed by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), the largest umbrella organization of unions in the country, which argued that the reforms were detrimental to the interests of the working class and threatened to erode labor standards and protections. The CGT also organized several protests and strikes against Miele’s policies, which have sparked clashes with the police and supporters of the president.
