US state takes Pfizer to court over Covid-19 shot. The pharmaceutical giant misled the public about the vaccine’s effectiveness and sought to silence critics, the Texas lawsuit claims.
The state of Texas has filed a lawsuit against Pfizer, accusing the company of making false and misleading claims about its Covid-19 vaccine and engaging in unfair and deceptive trade practices.
The lawsuit, filed on Thursday in a federal court in Dallas, alleges that Pfizer overstated the vaccine’s efficacy and safety, failed to disclose the risks and limitations of the vaccine, and suppressed or intimidated scientists and health professionals who raised concerns or criticized the vaccine.
The lawsuit also claims that Pfizer violated the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act by engaging in false advertising, misrepresenting the vaccine’s benefits and features, and omitting material facts that consumers needed to make informed decisions.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages, civil penalties, and injunctive relief to stop Pfizer from continuing its alleged misconduct.
“Pfizer has exploited the Covid-19 pandemic to enrich itself at the expense of the public health and safety of Texans,” Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement. “Pfizer’s vaccine is not the miracle cure that it claims to be, and its deceptive marketing has put millions of lives at risk.”
Pfizer has denied the allegations and said it will vigorously defend itself against the lawsuit.
“The lawsuit filed by the Texas Attorney General is baseless and without merit,” Pfizer spokesperson Amy Rose said in an email. “Pfizer stands by the safety and efficacy of its COVID-19 vaccine, which has been authorized by the FDA and endorsed by leading health authorities around the world. Pfizer is proud of its role in helping to end this global health crisis and will continue to work with governments and health care providers to ensure access to its vaccine for all who need it.”
