Erdogan: Armenia’s fulfillment of its obligations to Azerbaijan will play a special role in ensuring lasting peace in the region

“We see that we are a step closer to lasting peace in our region with the complete elimination of the occupation of Karabakh that has lasted for more than 30 years. It will be easier for Armenia to fulfill its obligations to Azerbaijan. The establishment of transport lines connecting the western regions of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan in the near future is also of special strategic importance,” said President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan as he addressed the 16th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, according to Azerbaijan in Focus, reporting AzerTac.

MFA: Armenia’s calls for an assessment mission to Azerbaijan’s Garabagh region are nothing more than hypocrisy

“We strongly reject the Armenian Foreign Minister’s baseless and deceitful allegations against Azerbaijan during his speech of November 9, 2023 at the 42nd session of the General Conference of UNESCO in Paris. It is absolutely unacceptable for Armenia to hypocritically continue to accuse Azerbaijan of conducting an alleged “ethnic cleansing” against Armenians who voluntarily moved to Armenia, and attempt to misuse international platforms to this end, while it has committed massacres and crimes against humanity and has violated the fundamental rights of almost 1 million Azerbaijanis during the 30 years of its military aggression,” MFA Spokesperson Aykhan Hajizada commented on the groundless allegations by the Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan during his speech at the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference, according to Azerbaijan in Focus, reporting AzerTac.

He noted that these baseless allegations openly contradict the reports and statements of UN agencies visiting the region, as well as those that are actively working in Armenia.

“Concerning the claims that cultural and historical monuments are allegedly in danger in Azerbaijan’s Garabagh region, it is completely unreasonable for Armenia to accuse Azerbaijan in this matter, while Armenia itself is known for deliberately destroying, appropriating, changing, and illegally transporting Azerbaijani cultural heritage in Armenia proper, as well as in the formerly occupied territories of Azerbaijan,” he said.

“The historical and religious monuments located in the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan are our national and cultural heritage and are being protected regardless of their secular or religious origins.

Armenia’s calls for an assessment mission to Azerbaijan’s Garabagh region from an international platform such as UNESCO, which is responsible for cultural, religious, and historical preservation, are nothing more than hypocrisy. Although Azerbaijan has frequently requested the implementation of evaluation missions, this has not been possible owing to the obstacles put in place by Armenia. UNESCO itself has confirmed this fact in its 2005 report.

We are once again witnessing Armenia’s smear campaign against Azerbaijan continue by its false and slanderous rhetoric from numerous international platforms, intent on undermining the chances of the peace deal.

We hope that Armenia will not miss this historic opportunity for peace in the region and will not hinder efforts for regional stability and economic development, which will ultimately be to the benefit of itself,” Hajizade added.

The monument to Stepan Shahumyan was dismantled in Khankendi

The monument to the Bolshevik Stepan Shaumyan was dismantled in Khankendi, according to Azerbaijan in Focus, reporting Turan.

Vladimir Lenin’s ally Shaumyan was appointed by him to the Extraordinary Commissioners for Caucasian Affairs in December 1917. In March 1918, Armenian Dashnak detachments subordinate to the Baku Council led by Shaumyan committed massacres of Azerbaijanis in Baku, Shamakhi, Guba and other eastern regions of Azerbaijan.

In August 1918, the Baku Council of People’s Commissars, headed by Shaumyan, was liquidated and its commissars were arrested by the new Socialist-Revolutionary-Menshevik government of the “Dictatorship of the Central Caspian Sea”. In September 1918, the commissars were taken to Krasnovodsk and shot in the deserts of Turkmenistan.

After the establishment of Soviet power in Azerbaijan and the creation of the Nagoorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region within it, the city of Khankendi was renamed “Stepanakert” in honor of Shahumyan.

Let us recall that in 2009 the memorial complex was dismantled in Baku

“26 Baku Commissars”, and their remains were reburied in the city cemetery.
