Russia says US preparing nuclear test site in Nevada

The US conducted a high-explosive experiment at a nuclear test site in Nevada on Wednesday, just hours after Russia announced that it would no longer abide by the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), which prohibits nuclear explosions. Moscow will respond in kind if Washington resumes atomic experiments.

The Energy Department said the test was part of the $1.8 billion Scorpius project, which aims to study the aging nuclear weapons stockpile and improve the detection of underground nuclear tests by other countries.

However, Russia accused the US of preparing for non-compliant nuclear test explosions and warned that it would “mirror” any such actions by Washington.

The CTBT, signed in 1996, has been ratified by 170 countries, including Russia, but not by the US, China, India, Pakistan, and North Korea. The treaty has not entered into force because eight key states, including the US and China, have not ratified it.

The US and Russia have observed a moratorium on nuclear testing since the early 1990s, but both countries have conducted subcritical tests, which involve explosives and nuclear material but do not trigger a chain reaction.

However, the Pentagon has recently announced plans for developing a high-yield version of the B61 gravity bomb, while a congressional advisory body has urged a massive expansion of the US nuclear arsenal, no matter the cost.

Nepal Quake Kills 128, Reduces Village to Rubble

At least 128 people were killed and scores more injured after a powerful quake hit western Nepal, reducing some buildings in Jajarkot to piles of rubble, video filmed Saturday morning showed.

Local officials said it had not been possible to establish contact in the area near the epicenter in Jajarkot, a hilly district with a population of 190,000 and villages scattered in remote hills. Residents of Bheri were seen climbing over piles of bricks, rocks and wood which were once buildings in the village.

The quake occurred at 11:47 p.m. (1802 GMT) on Friday in Jajarkot district of Karnali province. Jajarkot is about 500 kilometers west of the capital Kathmandu. Nepal’s National Seismological Centre said the quake was a magnitude 6.4 but the German Research Centre for Geosciences later downgraded the magnitude to 5.7 and the U.S. Geological Survey pegged it as a magnitude 5.6.

In 2015, about 9,000 people were killed in two earthquakes in Nepal. Whole towns, centuries-old temples and other historic sites were reduced to rubble, with more than a million houses destroyed, at a cost to the economy of $6 billion.

Can CBA’s decision to reduce interest rates cause Azerbaijani manat’s devaluation?

Reports have it that banks around the world keep adjusting interest rates to manage their currencies and respond to global economic conditions. Despite lowering interest rates as part of economic stimulus measures, inflation continues to hit the stock market. Rising costs and uncertain revenue growth take a toll on corporate profit margins, so to say, and stock prices fall in response. On a broader scale, high inflation creates unknowns about future interest rates.

It is interesting that the Central Bank of Azerbaijan also decided to lower interest rates. This has caused certain questions in people. Even according to some assumptions, opinions have been formed about the risks of devaluation of the Azerbaijani manat.

Economist expert Emin Gurbanov spoke about inflation risks in his comment to Azernews. He noted that in the last two years, interest rates in Azerbaijan were much higher and even remained unchanged. However, the expert linked the Central Bank’s lowering of the interest rates with the rising inflation.
