On October 24, a rally was held in front of the parliament in solidarity with Irakli Bebua, who was illegally detained by the so-called authorities of occupied Abkhazia in the Gali district. On October 19, the Social Justice Center, a watchdog, reported that the Bebuas’ health was deteriorating.
The rally was attended by the parents and family members of Irakli Bebua and the opposition. Their main demand is the release of Irakli Bebua and his return to the territory controlled by the Georgian authorities.
“Irakli’s health has been particularly serious lately. His physical and emotional condition is very difficult. That is why the family demands from the state to immediately transfer Irakli to the controlled territory and release him. The international platform is one of the levers for Irakli’s quick release, and I think that the state is not using this lever properly. That is why we call on the state to do everything possible to release Irakli quickly,” said a member of Irakli’s family.
Irakli Bebua was detained in Abkhazia on September 30, 2020, after setting fire to a decorative banner in Abkhaz flag colors as a protest to the “victory and independence day” celebration in the ethnic Georgian district of Gali. On December 7, 2020, he was sentenced to 9 years in jail. In accordance with the so-called Abkhazian penal code (which reduces the actual time served by double for this category of crimes), he still has 1 year and 5 months to serve before his release.

The United Nations has warned that it could be forced to stop working across the Gaza Strip by Wednesday unless there were urgent fuel deliveries to the war-torn territory. The UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) said that fuel has become the “most vital commodity” in Gaza, as it is needed to power generators for hospitals, bakeries and water desalination plants.
According to a UNRWA spokesperson only 54 trucks have entered Gaza from Egypt over the past three days carrying food, water and medicine. This is a far cry from the roughly 500 aid and commercial trucks that used to enter Gaza daily before the war. UNRWA has a “very sturdy diligence system” to ensure that any fuel it receives is only used for humanitarian purposes.
The UN World Health Organization (WHO) also appealed for a humanitarian pause in the Israel-Hamas war to allow safe deliveries of aid to civilians short of food, water, medicine, and electricity in the Israeli-besieged Gaza Strip.
Several hospitals in Gaza have already suffered a “total collapse” due to the acute fuel shortage, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. It called for the “immediate flow” of much-needed medical supplies and fuel into the Gaza Strip. The Palestine Red Crescent said it has delivered more than 16,300 food parcels in the last 24 hours in central Gaza, as well as Khan Younis and Rafah in the south.
