Tech billionaire Peter Thiel reportedly FBI informant

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) — Peter Thiel, a U.S. billionaire, venture capitalist and the co-founder of PayPal, may have been an FBI informant, Business Insider, a major U.S. business publication and a subsidiary of the German publisher Axel Springer SE, reported Thursday.

Thiel began providing information as a “confidential human source,” or CHS, for a Los Angeles-based agent in the summer of 2021, said the report.

The agent, named Johnathan Buma, specializes in investigating political corruption and so-called foreign-influence campaigns.

The term CHS indicates a long-running relationship with the FBI. Only people who are able to provide “valuable information … on a recurring basis” are granted CHS status, said the report, citing the FBI’s policy.

Business Insider’s sources, including far-right political figure Charles Johnson and several anonymous individuals, confirmed that the FBI added Thiel to its formal roster of registered informants.

As a CHS, Thiel was assigned a code name and an internal serial number to track his reporting, which was reviewed and “validated,” or cross-checked against other sources, by his case agents and their colleagues.

Thiel was a high-profile supporter and megadonor of former U.S. President Donald Trump, but the information he passed on was not about his domestic political contacts but focused on “foreign contacts and Silicon Valley intrigue,” potentially including so-called foreign influence operations in the tech industry, as reported.

One of the sources told Insider that Thiel’s collaboration with the FBI should be understood as part of his gradual distancing of himself from Trump and the broader MAGA movement, which has vigorously criticized the FBI and other federal law-enforcement agencies.

Donald Trump Says Republicans ‘Eat Their Young’ In Rant About Members of His Own Party’s ‘Lack of Loyalty’

donald-trump-says-republicans-eat-their-

The video, which was shared on Saturday, October 14, saw Trump unleashing his criticism towards both old and new members of the Republican party, as well as the donors and his 2024 rivals.

“I understand candidates that are losing by 57 to 70 points are getting together with RINO Paul Ryan, Mitt the loser Romney, Bill no guts or no talent Barr, and some broken political investors that will soon come to me, as most others already have,” Trump told his 6.4 million followers.

“These failed candidates should have started by campaigning effectively, which they didn’t because they really don’t have the skill or the talent to do so,” he continued. “Romney, who today couldn’t get elected dogcatcher in the great state of Utah, should have beaten an absolutely failed first term [Barack] Obama.”

Former Head of FBI’s New York Counterintelligence Office Pleads Guilty to Concealing Funds and Foreign Contacts

The former head of counterintelligence for the FBI’s New York field office, Charles McGonigal, has pleaded guilty in Washington, DC, to charges related to concealing funds he received from a former Albanian intelligence employee and his foreign contacts with the individual. This guilty plea follows McGonigal’s previous guilty plea in New York on charges of conspiring to violate US sanctions on Russia.

According to prosecutors, McGonigal worked to further the interests of the former foreign intelligence employee, who is now a naturalized US citizen from New Jersey. The individual allegedly gave McGonigal at least $225,000 in 2017. McGonigal claimed that the money was a loan for a consulting firm they planned to start together after his retirement from the FBI. However, it was revealed that there were no terms to the loan, and he never repaid it.

During his tenure at the FBI, McGonigal and the individual traveled to Albania multiple times, meeting with the country’s prime minister. McGonigal advocated for his friend’s financial interests in oil field drilling contracts during these trips, without disclosing them to the FBI. McGonigal admitted that he was aware of the prohibition on engaging in personal business while working for the FBI and expressed apologies to the bureau and his wife.

The statement of facts also revealed that the FBI initiated an investigation into a US citizen who was lobbying for a political party in Albania, partly based on information provided by McGonigal. McGonigal’s potential business partner, acting as a confidential human source, and a foreign Albanian contact facilitated meetings between witnesses in Europe and the FBI, including covering their travel expenses.

McGonigal is scheduled to be sentenced in February and could face a maximum of five years in prison, although the actual sentence may be less severe.
