In a press statement posted on the website of the US Department of State, Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated on the Independence Day anniversary of Armenia. The press statement reads as follows:
“On behalf of the United States of America, I send best wishes to the people of Armenia on your Independence Day. Armenia put itself on a path towards freedom and self-determination when it declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Since then, we have seen your commitment to democratic values, to developing and strengthening human rights, rule of law, economy, and justice for all Armenians. These values echo our own and we are proud to partner with Armenia in these areas. We will continue to support the Armenian people’s democratic aspirations, sovereignty, and security. The United States supports Armenia’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and remains committed to promoting a durable and dignified peace for the South Caucasus region where the rights of all are respected.
“We look forward to continuing to grow our bilateral relationship and economic ties. I wish the Armenian people a prosperous and peaceful year ahead.”

“I once again say that the anti-terror measures were carried out with high professionalism and accuracy in such a way that the civilian population was not harmed, and the civil infrastructure was not damaged. However, enemy positions, their weapons and equipment were destroyed,” said President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev as he addressed the nation.
“Now I am sure that the emergence of new situation in our region is inevitable. Because after the criminal regime surrendered, the source of this tension, this poisonous nest is already fading into history, and the Armenian population who lives in Karabakh will finally be able to breathe freely,” the head of state noted.
Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), who has recently chaired two congressional hearings on the plight of Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh and authored the Azerbaijan Democracy Act in 2015, issued the following statement on the unclear and threatening situation in the region:
“Now more than ever, President Biden must immediately push the United Nations Security Council to establish a mandate and peacekeeping mission to protect the Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The people of Nagorno-Karabakh are in a moment of grave danger. They have been forced to disarm and surrender their independence to a ruthless dictator whose government has repeatedly committed horrific abuses against them over many years, expressed its will to ethnically cleanse them, and even initiated a genocide by starvation with the blockade of the Lachin Corridor.
Tragically, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has called the Biden Administration’s bluff that it ‘will not tolerate’ an attack.
At an emergency hearing I chaired on September 6th, David Phillips—the Director of Columbia University’s Artsakh Atrocities Project—provided extensive evidence of the Azerbaijani government’s record of atrocities, including a list of perpetrators who are responsible.
I urge President Biden to immediately dispatch diplomats and expert observers in the Nagorno-Karabakh region to monitor the situation and immediately report any atrocity or abuse. The Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh have, as ever, every right to continue to live in their ancient homeland—and to do so in safety.”
An Artsakh delegation has arrived in Yevlakh to meet with representatives of Azerbaijan, RIA Novosti reports.
The delegation is accompanied by the Russian peacekeeping contingent and the Azerbaijani Police.
After a two-day large scale aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan, the authorities of Artsakh agreed to a ceasefire proposed by the Russian peacekeepers. It was decided to organize a meeting in Yevlakh to discuss the issue of rights and security of Artsakh Armenians.
